Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Bring Awareness to Issues

There are so many problems in the United States that stem from civil rights and human rights violations. While the United States is one of the most advanced countries when it comes to modern living, they are still behind with some of the human rights laws and enforcement ideas that they have.

This could be because there are not enough people who are fighting for these rights and this has been a problem for decades. Both Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin want to do something to make a difference but it is a constant struggle because of the human rights issues in the United States.

From the beginning, Larkin and Lacey have fought for human rights. They know what they want to be able to do and they also know that it is necessary to always fight for the “little guy.” They like to stand up for people who are unable to stand up for themselves or who simply can’t do anything to help themselves.

The men are activists in the truest sense of the word and have always done what they can to do things for ifferent people who are unabe to make things better on their own.

When Michael and Jim first started out, they were working as journalists. They made a difference with this but they also knew that they needed to try something else to make things better.

They wanted to do something that people could use when they had their rights violated against but their earnings as journalists were not quite enough to start a huge fund where they would be able to provide that type of help to people who were in different situations. It was something that made it hard for the men because they wanted to help but they were not able to.

The help that they needed came disguised as a problem. The men were arrested for the publication that they worked on. The sheriff’s office in Phoenix didn’t like what Lacey and Larkin had to say about them and they simply arrested them for doing it. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter

Not only was the arrest illegal in the sense of constitutional rights but it was also illegal in the way that it was carried out. The men, after having worked with civil rights cases for years, knew that they were within their rights and they decided that they would fight the charges that were brought againt them.

It took a long time for Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin to go to court but they got what they were after. After having to appeal the case several times, the men were offered a three million dollar settlement from the sheriff’s office.

They took the settlement and knew exactly what they would do with it. From there, they started the Frontera Fund. Now that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin run the fund, they still do some journalism. The fund has allowed them the chance to make a difference where they were unable to in the past.

Avaaz is a member-funded nonprofit that unites people across the globe to fight for causes that are important to them. The values guiding Avaaz include an inherent belief in equality as humans, or in the organization’s words, “We are all human beings first”. This value guides each and every campaign. With this value as a foundation, the organization leaves the finer details to the members. Each year, a member poll decides which issues are most important to the Avaaz community. These issues establish a yearly list of priorities. The Avaaz leadership then continues to check in with each and every member through out the year on a weekly basis, to establish what is the most important issue in the moment. Because our world changes so constantly, pressing issues can come up quickly and call for quick action. Through email and response Avaaz headquarters can connect groups, set up campaigns, and funnel protesters into one physical location or direct their calls to politicians in a powerful way.

How Do Individuals Contribute to Avaaz?

Avaaz is completely member-supported. They do not take money from political organizations or large companies, but instead operate in a grassroots way through donations given by many, many individuals across the globe. Individuals contribute funds as well as information. Members can write in about causes that they feel should be funded. Avaaz can then poll the collective to see if there is energy and passion behind that cause. Many of the causes that they work for on a day to day basis are brought up by members. By taking part in campaigns with millions of other people, an individual’s voice can be amplified to the point that it is heard in a powerful way.

Karl Heideck: Life In Litigation

Litigation attorneys represent everyone from criminals to real estate firms. They prepare these cases for trial but most are settled out of court. In criminal cases, defendants usually take a plea deal while in personal injury cases the plaintiffs usually accept a settlement.

The majority of civil litigation lawyers work with several other attorneys at a firm. In rarer instances, an attorney might have their own private practice or work at a boutique firm. Some work for the government but most commonly are employed in the private sector.

The first task in litigation is research and investigation. The attorney will need to collect documents and align all relevant details. They will then open a discussion with the other party’s attorney to try and reach a settlement. If a settlement cannot be reached, they will file with the court. The litigators then share important information related to the case in order to prepare for trial. Often times, a settlement will be reached during or after the pretrial stage. After a verdict is determined, there might be an appeal. This is where any issues not properly addressed can be outlined in more detail.

Karl Heideck, creator of the guide outlined above, mentions that the key to success in litigation is to be kind and considerate to everyone. It is important to be respectful and civil with fellow litigators, even those opposing you. Karl Heideck has found that being respectful to everyone results in a better chance of reaching an agreement or settlement.

Karl Heideck has worked in Philadelphia for over 10 years and specializes in litigation. He attended Swarthmore College where he earned his bachelors degree in 2003. He later went to James E. Beasley School of Law in 2009 and got his law degree. He was a project attorney for Pepper Hamilton LLP and held an associate position for Conrad O’Brien.

Karl Heideck has been a member of Hire Council since 2015 and provides risk management advising services. His litigation experience includes liability, corporate law, commercial, and employment proceedings. He is constantly learning and teaching others to expand their success in litigation.
