Why Liberals Support End Citizens United

Standard

After reading the article End Citizens United: Fighting Against “Anything Goes” Campaign Finance By Matthew Camden, I was ecstatic to learn how many people on higher levels saw a problem with what’s going on in Washington D.C. these days. As a pretty liberal person, I’ve never agreed with corporations having their hands so deeply mixed in the batter of politics. It reminds me of years past when powerful employers, with ties to politics, or a special lobbing interest would sway the votes of their employees with the subtle threat of termination. Now, its the overwhelming mass media influence that’s leveraged by savy corporations, which may be worse.

The political action committee (PAC) End Citizens United is leading the fight against this masterful form of enfluencing voters. In opposition to the supreme courts majority ruling to support corporations anonymous financing of campaigns, essentially the same status as individuals. The PAC’s mission to counter balance the disparity of funding between the campaigns of the “haves” and the “have nots” stands out as a genuine grassroots effort that could actually work. The leadership of the commitee has teamed with organizations with long histories of opposing the unjust or unconstitutional. Groups like, the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union, who know how to affect change on the local and national level.

As an individual, its not only encouraging to know there’s a committee addressing this, but it’s a call to action. End Citizens United wants to use the power of grassroots funding, well thought-out activism, and uncompromising leadership to combat a ruling that chips at the foundation of democracy. I’m all for fairness, so I have to support the logic of what End Citizens United is trying to do. I would like to think the outcomes of votes in this country, would depend on the qualification of the candidates for respective appointments, not their ability to buy air time.
